2018 Thursday Movie Picks Schedule (Preliminary)

Hi everyone! I finally have the 2018 themes. Please note this is not the final schedule as I will be adding suggested themes and may reorganize all the themes.

So anyway, this has been the fifth year I'm doing this. For those that have stuck around: thank you so much and I hope you continue to do so. The TMP Television Edition is a new edition I started in 2017 and it's back for 2018 as they have been so much fun. As before they will be on the last Thursday of each month. You can pick TV series or mini-series, just NOT TV movies.

Lastly, I've opened up NINE dates for suggestions on next year's schedule including one for the Halloween Edition. [Wendell you have already made your suggestions and I have already picked two of them.] Everyone else if you're interested here are the submission criteria:
a) must have participated in a few TMPs and have commented on previous posts.
b) submit two (no more as I'll probably have a hard time choosing) suggestions by posting a comment on this post. Only on this post.

Thursday Movie Picks #178: Ugly Duckling to Beautiful Swan Makeover

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share your movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple: based on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them. For further details and the schedule visit the series main page here.

---

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Ugly Duckling to Beautiful Swan Makeover

---

There are so many of these makeover movies so I'm sure you are spoiled for choice.Anyway here are my three picks.

Grease (1978)
Good girl Sandy falls for a greaser so she gets a makeover to be one of the Pink Ladies. One of my favorite movies and love the songs! This is also probably one of the only movies that the guy had a makeover too.

The Princess Diaries (2001)
When Mia finds out she is the heir to some European country she gets a makeover to become a princess. The movie is sweet. Mia and her friends were funny and cute and Mandy Moore was great as the mean girl. Anyway I was so mad that when the second movie came out they chucked out Mia's best friend's brother, but I guess he was busy with Rooney.

Strictly Ballroom (1992)
When his dancing partner leaves him, experienced ballroom dancer Scott takes Fran a beginner dancer as his partner for an upcoming competition. And so she gets intense training and a makeover for it. Of the three, I think this is probably the least known; I highly recommend it. It is such a charming charming movie.

Thursday Movie Picks #177: TMP Television Edition - Workplace

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple: based on the theme of the week pick three to five titles and tell us why you picked them. For further details and the schedule visit the series main page here.

---

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is TMP Television Edition - Workplace

---

There are a lot of workplace TV shows when you think about. All the cop, legal and medical dramas are all workplace shows and I tried my very best to not pick one of those except for one. I'm picking the ones I like this week.

The Office (2001 - 2003) & The Office (2005 - 2013)
Follows the lives of employees at a paper company. I've seen both the UK version and the US one, although not all since there were so many seasons. I think I stopped up until Jim and Pam got married. Anyway I enjoyed both versions.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013 - )
Follows the lives of detectives at Brooklyn's 99th Precinct. I don't watch a lot of comedies, but this is one of the current one still airing that I love. It's funny, it's sharp and the characters are super geeky about the things they love, it's cute.

Superstore (2015 - )
Follows the lives of employees at a superstore. A new favourite which I only started watching from the second season. It's funny and just very easy to get into even when you haven't started from the beginning.

Boston Public (2000 - 2004)
Follows the lives of faculty members at a high school. It's been soo long since I saw this. Anyway I like that they show a different side to school.

Thursday Movie Picks #176: Origin Movies

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share your movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple: based on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them. For further details and the schedule visit the series main page here.

---

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Origin Movies

---

When I came up this theme, I was thinking of something that was more than just a prequel and something along the lines of character origins, so that's what my picks are based on. Unfortunately I don't think any of these movies are that great.

Dracula Untold (2014)
The movie uses the real life 15th century Romanian prince famously known as Vlad the Impaler as the origin story for Dracula of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Not the most creative as an origin story since people have always wondered if Stoker had modeled Dracula on Vlad because of the name and origin country. The movie was just ok.

Maleficent (2014)
An origin story for Maleficent the one that cursed Aurora in Sleeping Beauty. I just did not like the origin story for Maleficent and the movie had too much CGI. Is it just me or did anyone else when they saw Sleeping Beauty as a kid, just thought Maleficent was just like a witch and not some fantastical creature? Like I was so surprised that she had like wings and horns. I mean in the animated movie I thought she was just wearing an exaggerated version of a kind of double conical headwear that European women wore in the middle ages.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
Not good and just very forgettable. From the title, my guess is that they probably had wanted to do a bunch of X-Men origin movies...well that didn't happen.

Thursday Movie Picks #175: Movies with Strong Female Character(s)

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share your movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple: based on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them. For further details and the schedule visit the series main page here.

---

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Movies with Strong Female Character(s) [Suggested by Birgit]

---

Today's theme is by Birgit

Volver (2006)
A great movie with an almost all female cast about family and secrets. When something happens to her daughter, Raimunda holds it together and fixes the situation as she is also confronted with the truth of her mother's death.

The Hunger Games (2012-2015)
Katniss - the girl did take the place of her sister and survived two Hunger Games.

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
Rita Vrataski - the warrior that lead the victory in one of the battles against an alien race. Live, die, repeat. You've got to be brave to do that and without the guidance that Cage got.

Thursday Movie Picks #174: An Adaptation (of a book, comic, game etc that hasn't been adapted) You Want to See

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple: based on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them. For further details and the schedule visit the series main page here.

---

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is An Adaptation (of a book, comic, game etc that hasn't been adapted) You Want to See

---

Ok I love today's theme because I have often thought...hey I would like to see a movie of that. My Picks are going to be all books, all standalone titles (meaning not part of a series).

YA Books

Looking for Alaska by John Green
This is the only book by John Green (you may have heard of his other books: The Fault in Our Stars and Paper Towns which have been made into movies) that I've read and I love it.  Apparently I read somewhere that the movie at some point was in the works but somewhere along the line it fell through or something...I'm not sure if it's back on, which is why it's on this list. The gist: believing he has led a boring existence, a teenage boy decides to go to a boarding school where things are perhaps less boring. There he falls for one of the girls in his group of friends, called Alaska.

The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart
This one is so much fun. Frankie is witty and smart, but has been treated as being less smart or excluded for being a girl. Realising that in the real world the ruling elite are mostly from the old boys club; she secretly infiltrates her school's all boys secret society and outwits them...basically there a lot of amazing pranks involved.

Stolen: A Letter to My Captor by Lucy Christopher
16 year old Gemma is drugged and kidnapped from Bangkok Airport and taken to the Australian Outback. The story is told in letter form from Gemma to Ty, her captor, as she reflects on what has happened to her from the moment she saw him. But here's the thing, as you read, you don't really know if Gemma has escaped, is still a captive or worse...until the very end of her letter of course.  Anyway there had been news that there was going to be a movie, but it has been a year or perhaps more since the news; it has been very quiet. Here's hoping it is still happening.

Adult Books

Survivor by Chuck Palahniuk
If you've seen Fight Club, or read Palahniuk's books than you sort of know what to expect. His characters tend to be a bit or a lot nutty. In Survivor, the main character is Tender Branson, the last surviving member of a cult. The book opens with him speaking into a flight recorder of an empty plane. He plans to tell his life story, before the plane crashes. The story is all sort of crazy with a lot of dark humor, I'm very curious what a movie of it would look like.

Local Girl Missing by Claire Douglas
I've been reading quite a lot of thrillers lately and this is one of the better ones. The gist: 21 year old Sophie goes missing 18 years ago and her best friend, Frankie, is haunted over what happened to her. When Frankie gets a call from Sophie's brother, now a local newspaper editor, that her remains may have been found, Frankie goes back to her hometown to find out if it's really Sophie. The story is also a little spooky which I like. I don't even remember where it is set, but I imagine the movie would have a lot rain and very misty/foggy.

Thursday Movie Picks #173: A Stranger

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple: based on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them. For further details and the schedule visit the series main page here.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is A Stranger

---

This is I think one of those more unique sort of theme unlike say remakes or vampire movies...so I'm curious as to what movies end up on everyone's list today. Anyway here's mine, the bottom two picks are the ones that I like.

Sommersby (1993)
I've seen this at least twice, but this is one of those movies where I retain very little of what happens other than the basic plot and a bit of the ending. A man returns home after the American Civil War, but his wife suspects he is an imposter.

Stoker (2013)
After India's father dies, an uncle she never knew existed comes to live with her and her mother. I've picked this movie so many times before but here it is again because it fits so well and also a favourite of mine. A beautifully shot psychological thriller.

The Guest (2014)
A man visits the family of a fallen soldier and claims to have served with him. He's so nice and charming that the family lets him stay with them. The only roles I had seen Dan Stevens play prior to seeing this were all middle/upper class British guys and this was such a departure; he got really physically fit and plays an American with a southern accent. Also you'd never think the guy who was cousin Matthew could do sinister, but yeah Dan Stevens was so so good in this. Of course this year there was Legion, where he got to play crazy as well...which were the best bits of the very inconsistent TV Show.

Thursday Movie Picks #172: Halloween/Television Edition: Horror

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share three to five  movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple simple: Each week there is a topic for you to create a list of movies and tell us why you chose them. For further details visit the series main page here.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Halloween/Television Edition: Horror

---

Hey it's October and the whole of this month I'm running the Halloween Edition. Take a look at what's in store for the rest of the weeks.

October 5 - Halloween Edition: Masks
October 12 - Halloween Edition: Dolls
October 19 - Halloween Edition: Body Horror [Suggested by Myerla]
October 26 - Halloween/Television Edition: Horror

First ever Halloween/Television edition, this is going to be fun. I'm picking favourites.

Being Human (2008-2013)
I feel like I have talked about this series somewhere here before, but since this is the first TV horror theme, I'm not quite sure when I would have. So anyway the gist, this UK series follows a ghost, a werewolf and a vampire sharing an apartment and them trying to hold on to their humanity. I have to admit, that plot summary sounded so so stupid the first time I heard it, but I had heard good reviews so I gave it a try and turns out I love it (there are five seasons, but I have only seen 3). It's a horror/drama series that is at times funny and often just so sad as well. If you like American Werewolf in London, definitely give it a try, even how the werewolf got turned reminds me a lot of that movie.

Misfits (2009-2013)
This one follows 5 juvenile delinquents (about late teens/early 20-ish youths) who while doing community service gets hit by lightning during a freak storm and get some special powers. I know this sounds more like a superhero sort of series...it sort of is and sort of not just that too as it's mostly about characters trying to get a handle on their own powers; many can't control it which leads to disastrous horrifying consequences. Anyway love this series. Even when it wasn't that great in season 4/5 it was still pretty good. Like Being Human, it just balances drama with horror and comedy elements really well. And like Being Human, Misfit is also getting a American remake...so go and watch the original first.

Bates Motel  (2013-2017)
I have not seen the last season yet, but like the first three seasons. The series is a contemporary prequel to Psycho. In the first season, teenage Norman Bates and his mother is new in town and have just opened the Bates Motel. We see glimpses of the man Norman would become as the series progress and throughout it there's this sense of dread that Norman is going to destroy everyone around him.

The Vampire Diaries (2009-2017)
The gist, two vampire brothers, Stefan and Damon, vie for the affections of a human girl Elena, who looks very much like a girl they used to know more than a hundred years ago. It's a teen soap with vampires - my guess is most people won't give this a chance. Which is a pity, this series is soo much fun, totally bingeable. I've seen all the seasons except the last, and I think it's been consistently good. The world building and the mythology it creates for all the supernatural characters are great. Favourite character probably has to be Damon, the so-called bad brother, because he is so consistent, consistently selfish that is that even when he does a good, seemingly selfless deed, he does so because it benefits him to do so...and also, he has the best lines.

Thursday Movie Picks #171: Halloween Edition - Body Horror

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Halloween Edition - Body Horror [Suggested by Myerla]

---

Hey it's October and the whole of this month I'm running the Halloween Edition. Take a look at what's in store for the rest of the weeks.

October 5 - Halloween Edition: Masks
October 12 - Halloween Edition: Dolls
October 19 - Halloween Edition: Body Horror [Suggested by Myerla]
October 26 - Halloween/Television Edition: Horror

This week's theme is one from Myerla

Black Swan (2010)
I think there were a few in these, one was Nina's broken nail, then there was feather/thorn thing and then there was also the creepy scene with the ex prima ballerina, I can't remember what happen but I think it also had a body horror scene.

Alien
Don't know which Alien movie I saw, just that I saw it when I was very young and was thoroughly freaked out and have not seen an Alien movie after.

The Fly (1986)
Another one where I saw it very young, under ten, freaked me out, never going to see it again.

An American Werewolf in London (1981)
This is here of course, like The Fly for the transformation scenes. Also if you like werewolf movies, this is one of the good ones.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Halloween Edition - Dolls

---

Hey it's October and the whole of this month I'm running the Halloween Edition. Take a look at what's in store for the rest of the weeks.

October 5 - Halloween Edition: Masks
October 12 - Halloween Edition: Dolls
October 19 - Halloween Edition: Body Horror [Suggested by Myerla]
October 26 - Halloween/Television Edition: Horror

This is a boring week; I thought I had seen a lot more movies with scary dolls but apparently I haven't, so my list is pathetic. When I googled scary doll movies, there aren't that many titles either and about half of them are Chucky movies.

Chucky
I think I saw the original and one of the sequels. Can't remember any of the plot details.

Annabelle
I thought it was an ok movie, but apparently not a lot of people like it.

October 5 - Halloween Edition: Masks
October 12 - Halloween Edition: Dolls
October 19 - Halloween Edition: Body Horror [Suggested by Myerla]
October 26 - Halloween/Television Edition: Horror

It's the 4th annual Halloween Edition! Yep we've done four rounds of these already! Today's theme is masks.

Scream (1996-2011)
I never got the appeal of the Scream movies when I saw them a long time ago. I've recently rewatched the first three Scream movies and I get it now. I still haven't watch most of the movies if not all that Scream references, but I know enough of them now, to get what it's trying to reference.

You're Next (2011)
Hmm...I think if you like Scream, I'm guessing you would like this too. It's a clever horror thriller that flips the home invasion plot.

The Purge (2013)
The doll like masks and preppy outfits of the tormentors in this one were just creepy.

Thursday Movie Picks #168: TMP Television Edition - Family

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple: based on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them. For further details and the schedule visit the series main page here.

---

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is TMP Television Edition - Family

---

I had to think about this quite a bit. For some reason I'm not quite remembering as many Family TV shows that I've probably seen. Here are the ones that I do remember and love.

Jane the Virgin (2014 - )
The series follows Jane, who get mistakenly artificially inseminated. So ignore the lame basic premise and super awful title that I'm sure has driven some potential viewers away...I almost didn't watch it too. This series is so so good. It's sweet, it's funny, it has fun with itself with the whole telenovella stuff...it really has a good sense of humor and it is such a heartwarming dramedy. This is also the only family friendly series depicting a family today.

Peaky Blinders (2013 - )
Love this series. I was one of my picks for the period drama TV series theme. The gist - set after World War 1, it follows the fictional Shelby family as they run their legitimate and criminal business. The series feels like a modern crime drama series with its pacing and style...that and the modern rock music used throughout that fits in so well.

Animal Kingdom (2016 - )
The gist: when a teen boy's mom dies, he goes to live with the family he has never met: grandma and four uncles who all lead a life of crime specializing in heists. If you've seen Animal Kingdom the movie and like it or love Peaky Blinders, you should definitely check out Animal Kingdom the TV series. I enjoyed the first season, but I think part of me was also preoccupied in comparing the movie and the TV series. However, the second series has gone way past the timeline/material depicted in the movie that it was fun seeing what new stuff the series was coming up with. Thus I found the second season a much more addictive watch, especially to see where everyone's alliance lies

Thursday Movie Picks #167: Just Not Funny Comedies

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple: based on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them. For further details and the schedule visit the series main page here.

---

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Just Not Funny Comedies

---

One of those genres where I often go...what...people like this? They found this funny? It could be a cultural/language thing? Comedy is just one of those genres that doesn't translate well.

The Hangover (2009)
Just didn't find it that funny. Maybe it appeals more to guys?

Wedding Crashers (2005)
I've watched it again recently. Still feel pretty much the same way as The Hangover.

Ace Ventura (1994/1995)
Don't know which one I saw (probably both of them?) thought it was one of the worst things I had ever seen. So not a fan of slapstick/physical comedy.

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)
Like I think I get it...like we're suppose to laugh at these ridiculous sexist fools in the seventies and say can't believe these things used to happen...except it still does and I saw this in late October early November of last year, so yeah, could not find it funny.
